HMCS Haida
The Queen and Prince Philip honoured one of Canada’s most famous warships this week.
Prince Philip gave historic ship HMCS Haida a maritime heritage award on behalf of the World Ship Trust on 29 June. It is only the 30th ship to receive such an honour.
HMCS Haida is one of only 27 Tribal class destroyers, built in the UK during World War II. The Canadian navy were given eight vessels.
Haida saw action in two wars and was retired in 1963. She is today moored in Hamilton, Halifax where she is now a floating naval museum.
The warship was bought by Parks Canada in 2002, restored and moved to Hamilton for permanent display to the public.
Prince Philip presented a certificate to two Parks Canada officials.
It was the first time the Royal couple have been in the Nova Scotia province for over 15 years and is part of their tour of Canada.
