Chatham Historic Dockyard's latest launch this weekend
Thursday, July 22, 2010 at 6:01PM
This weekend, 24th and 25th July, sees the launch of No.1 Smithery - a new museum for Chatham Historic Dockyard.
No. 1 Smithery, a joint venture between Chatham HIstoric Dockyard, the National Maritime Museum and the Imperial War Museum, opens to the public this Saturday July 24th, 2010 with plenty of street entertainment by 'Smithery Workers' planned in celebration.
The new project exhibits previously unseen historic ship and maritime artefacts, models, art, paintings, national and international touring exhibitions.
Chatham's new museum adds to the maritime heritage of the area and it is hoped that this latest attraction will give visitor numbers to the historic dockyard a real boost as well as contribute to local regeneration.
The building itself, a former workshop that forged parts for naval ships from 1808 to the 1970's has been restored at a cost of more than £13m and has revitalised a listed building of the UK's maritime heritage that was to be demolished.
